Nature of Work
Provide coverage as an Advanced Practice Provider in the Section of Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT). This is a full-time 1.0 FTE clinical faculty position that will focus primarily on outpatient care of hematology/oncology infants, children, adolescents and young adults at the Colorado Springs Children’s Hospital Colorado in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD). You will be a member of a provider team that integrates clinical care, education, and research within CCBD. This position will also have “on-call” responsibilities and occasional weekend/holiday coverage support for patients within CCBD.
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provide independent care of pediatric hematology patients and ancillary patient service in the outpatient clinic setting with occasional inpatient and weekend/holiday call coverage.
- Provide timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) of progress notes, transfer documentation, and discharge summaries.
- Interpret diagnostic and monitoring tests.
- Provide coordination of care between the inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Participate in the treatment of patients on clinical research protocols and liaise with members of the clinical research team to ensure appropriate study conduct for relevant patients.
- Coordinate multi-disciplinary care with other members of CCBD and other specialties and services.
- Assist other CCBD providers in communications with outside referring and primary care providers.
- Coordinate and assist with education of new patients and families.
- Participate in Quality/Safety, and Process Improvement Initiatives.
- Provide educational support to nursing and support staff.
- Perform procedures independently, after an appropriate period of training if needed:
- Lumbar punctures with or without intrathecal chemotherapy administration.
- Bone marrow aspirations/biopsies.
- This position will have occasional weekend call responsibilities in rotation with other APPs
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Masters’ degree as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
- Current board certification (FNP, PNP, CPNP, PA)
- Active Colorado license
- Active DEA license in Colorado
- Minimum 3 years of experience working in pediatrics as an Advanced Practice Provider

- Ability to effectively communicate professionally, clearly and effectively with staff and faculty within and outside the Section, Department and/or hospital.
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients and families and colleagues.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Strong advocacy skills.
- Knowledge of best practices in patient safety and quality care.
- Ability to write orders, including diagnostic tests, medications, care instructions, and adding to patients’ electronic medical records.
- Ability to perform selected procedures including but not limited to lumbar punctures with or without intrathecal chemotherapy and bone marrow aspirates and biopsies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong preference for experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant managing pediatric hematology and oncology patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- For Nurse Practitioner applicants, Acute Care Certification is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing Children’s Oncology Group study protocols including clinical care coordination and study audits.
- Experience in using the EPIC electronic medical records system
- Familiarity with or fluency (preferred) in medical Spanish, meeting hospital criteria for language certification qualification.
